CLEAR GUIDANCE FOR STRONGER FAMILIES AND STRONGER CARE
|
I specialize in helping parents stay connected to their kids in a digital world, guide students who feel called to psychiatry, and support doctors in building sustainable careers that prevent burnout and protect what matters most at home.
As a double-board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, I’m honored to be recognized as a trusted parenting and mental-health expert serving families and the next generation of healthcare clinicians. Here are some ways through which I’d be glad to serve you: |
HERE IS MY BACKSTORY
|
I didn’t set out planning to become a child & adolescent psychiatrist. I simply followed the moments in my life that kept pulling me toward kids, families, and their stories.
Early on, teachers nominated me to be a peer mediator, which was my first glimpse into helping people navigate conflict and understand each other. At home, I watched my father—a minister—spend countless hours sitting with people in their hardest moments, and I learned what it meant to support someone with compassion and steadiness. In medical school, I thought I would end up in pediatrics or pediatric surgery. But during my psychiatry rotation, everything changed the moment I was handed a list of patients and told, “Go meet the family, hear their story, and come tell me what you saw.” Sitting with kids, getting on their level, understanding their worlds, and watching their lives transform without procedures or scalpels felt electric. I found myself thinking deeply about family dynamics, resilience, emotion, and the small shifts that help a child reclaim their confidence and joy. I met mentors who modeled what it meant to be knowledgeable, grounded, family-centered, and human. They showed me a version of medicine where you could help people break patterns, heal relationships, and rediscover hope. That experience reshaped my entire career. I realized that if I wanted to make a meaningful impact, it would be through supporting kids, supporting the people who love them, and closing the gap in a field where more than 15 million children need help but only about 8,300 child psychiatrists exist to serve them. Today, my mission is clear. I equip families, students, and mental-health professionals with practical tools, evidence-based insight, and real-world guidance so they can help kids grow, thrive, and lead emotionally healthy lives. Every breakthrough reminds me why this work matters. It’s an honor to support families as they navigate their hardest moments, to guide students and residents as they grow into confident clinicians, and to equip professionals with tools that elevate the care they deliver. And that’s why I’m here—on this site, on my channels, and in every space I serve; to share the insight, clarity, and practical support that help families thrive, strengthen clinical training, and empower the next generation of mental-health leaders. |
SOME RANDOM FACTS ABOUT MEI was born in Germany and speak both Spanish and English.
I’ve always loved languages and my kids and I are huge Duolingo fans who are constantly learning something new together. I’m a proud military brat and a Navy veteran who has lived in multiple states and countries. Those experiences shaped my worldview, deepened my curiosity, and taught me how to connect with people from all walks of life. My wife and I are Catholic and our faith shapes the way we raise our family and the way I serve others. It’s a grounding part of who I am and how I show up in the world. I’m a drummer who enjoys making music and singing whenever I get the chance. Creativity and rhythm have always been a big part of my life. I love traveling with my family and exploring places that help us learn, connect, and slow down together. Time with them is my favorite way to recharge. I’m a Kansas City Chiefs fan and a hardcore Golden State Warriors fan, especially Steph Curry. Sports are a fun escape and something I love sharing with my kids. I’m happiest doing “dad things,” whether that’s playing outside, helping with schoolwork, or cheering on my kids in whatever they’re excited about. Being a dad is one of the greatest joys of my life. In 2021, I received the Dorris Kerr Larkin Award from The Kansas African American Museum. It was an honor to be recognized alongside fellow Wichita native Sheinelle Jones-Ojeh from the Today Show. I’m endlessly curious and always reading, studying, and learning about child development, behavior, psychology, and how families grow stronger. Learning energizes me and constantly pushes me to become better for the people I serve. |
